INTRODUCTION

Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya took birth in A.D.788 at Kalady, Kerala. His advent was to restore the faith of common folk in the Sanathana Dharma by giving a new dimension and direction to the highly acclaimed Vedanta philosophy revealing the truth of Advaita or Non-duality. Shankara showed the world that only these Advaitic principles could bring about complete understanding of Vedic knowledge by removing the inconsistencies born out of inappropriate interpretations of the Vedas given by different preceptors belonging to both Vedic and non-Vedic schools of thought.  His celebrated commentaries in Sanskrit on the Prasthanathrayee, the three canonical texts of the Vedantic philosophical tradition, viz., the Bhagavad-Gita, Upanishads and Brahma Sutra, are vital in helping the seeker attain the supreme goal of self-knowledge, in this very birth. These profound commentaries of Shankara are fortunately available intact in their original form, even today. As they are all in Sanskrit, a language which is not widely spoken today, these commentaries do not reach a wider audience and the tradition of study and reading from them is on the wane.

Brahmaleen Maha Mandaleshwar Swami Vidyanandagiriji Maharaj, the 10th pontiff of Kailash Brahmavidya Peeth, Rishikesh, had taken a fervent initiative to halt this trend by reviving the regular daily reading of Sankara Bhashya. He set an example by himself reading the Bhashya regularly, for an hour a day, since July 1998, till his Maha Samadhi in 2008. Following in his footsteps, hundreds of admirers of Sankara have taken upon themselves the task of Bhashya parayanam – daily reading from the commentaries of Sankaracharya, thus carrying forward the tradition.

With a view to continue this scholarly and sacred tradition, Sri Badari Dham in the Himalayas has been chosen as the venue for a programme called the ‘Sankara Bhashya Parayananjali’–a traditional reading of all the commentaries of Shankaracharya, by various Sadhus and Sannyasins. This is scheduled to be held from 15th of Sept till the 27th Sept 2010.
